Handwoven Wool Care
Wool is a resilient yet delicate natural fiber that requires gentle care to maintain its texture and durability. Here are some tips for caring for handwoven wool items:
Washing: Wool generally doesn’t need frequent washing, as it’s naturally resistant to dirt and odors. When needed, hand wash in cool water with a gentle wool-specific detergent. Avoid hot water and agitation, which can cause felting and shrinkage. Never wring or twist wool, as this can damage the fibers.
Drying: Press excess water out by gently pressing or rolling the item between two towels. Lay flat to dry on a clean, dry towel in a well-ventilated area. Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators, as these can cause the wool to lose its softness and shape.
Brushing and Refreshing: Gently brush wool items with a soft bristle brush to remove surface dust and restore the fibers. To freshen up, hang the item in a steamy bathroom or in indirect sunlight for a brief period; this helps eliminate odors and relax fibers.
Storage: Store wool items in a cool, dry place. Fold them neatly to avoid stretching and distortion. Moths are attracted to wool, so consider using cedar blocks or lavender sachets as a natural moth repellent. Or, consider using an air tight container for storage.
Spot Cleaning: Treat small stains by dabbing with a clean cloth and a solution of cool water and mild wool detergent. Avoid scrubbing, which can damage the fibers and create fuzzing.
With these gentle care steps, your wool handwoven pieces will retain their warmth, softness, and beauty for years.
