Open Weave Scarf Care

Cotton and linen which I commonly use to weave open, lacy scarves are strong and durable fibers but the open structure of the weave requires gentle attention when washing and drying. Here’s a guide to keep them looking their best:

  1. Washing: Hand wash with gentle detergent in cool to warm water. Make sure that you squeeze and swish gently but never ring or twist.

  2. Drying: Place the scarf between two towels and roll and press to release excess water without ringing or twisting. Prepare open weave scarves for drying by hanging or laying flat and gently tugging loose threads back into place, shaping the scarf as you go. Cotton can hang to dry while linen should lay flat to dry.

  3. Ironing: For a smoother look, iron on medium heat while the fabric is still slightly damp. If you like, you can place a thin cloth over the item to protect the fabric or iron on the reverse side.

  4. Storage: Fold and store in a cool, dry place. Avoid tightly packing or hanging heavy cotton items, as this can stretch the fibers and affect the shape.

With these simple steps, your handwoven cotton items will stay soft, strong, and beautifully textured over time.
