Handwoven Alpaca Care
Alpaca fiber is soft, lightweight, and durable, but it benefits from gentle care to maintain its luxurious feel. Here’s how to care for your handwoven alpaca items:
Washing: Alpaca items don’t need frequent washing, as alpaca fiber naturally repels dirt and odors. When washing is necessary, hand wash in cool water with a mild wool or cashmere detergent. Avoid rubbing, wringing, or agitating the fabric, as alpaca is delicate and can stretch easily.
Rinsing: After washing, rinse thoroughly in cool water. Press out excess water gently by pressing or rolling the item between two towels, but avoid twisting or wringing.
Drying: Lay flat to dry on a clean, dry towel in a well-ventilated area. Keep the item away from direct sunlight or heat sources, as these can cause the fibers to lose their softness and shape.
Storing: Store your alpaca items folded rather than hung to avoid stretching. Use a cool, dry place and consider adding lavender sachets or cedar blocks as a natural moth deterrent. When absolutely necessary, store in an air tight container but make sure no moisture exists before storing to avoid mold or mildew.
De-pilling: Occasionally, alpaca may develop some pilling, especially with friction. Remove pills gently by hand or with a fabric shaver, taking care not to pull on the fibers.
Spot Cleaning: For small stains, blot with a clean cloth and a small amount of water mixed with a mild detergent. Avoid vigorous rubbing, as alpaca fibers are more delicate than wool.
Following these tips will keep your alpaca handwoven items looking beautiful and feeling soft for years to come.
